The Year in Books, 2023

  1. I’m so jealous that your book has a Chinese translation. That would be so cool. The third edition of Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology had a Korean translation, but that was before I came along as coauthor.

  2. I’m curious about why you disagree with Harden. I read her book and agreed with almost all of her social-political conclusions re the consequences of behavioural genetics—though I freely admit that I’m also extremely egalitarian.

    1. It’s been a while since I thought about this, and my notes are sparse, but: In Chapter 12, Harden notes that we shouldn’t mistake being [genetically] lucky for being good, i.e. that having the luck of good genetic traits (including perseverance, conscientiousness, etc.) should not be considered a sign of virtue. That’s true, but I think this section makes the leap of genetic luck being part of the trait to being all of the trait, and therefore the trait not being praiseworthy. Unless we’re discussing eye color, pretty much everything (as Harden herself explains well) has environmental contributions as well, that are encouraged by rewards.

Also: Harden claims (correctly) that merit can only be defined instrumentally, as what brings about a preferrable society. Therefore rewarding e.g. test performance isn’t necessarily rewarding merit, since it may be preferable to have a balance of students who fit other criteria. This seems slippery logic when actually applied, though, because defining what a preferrable society is seems as hard or harder to define than conventional merit. Note that we currently do this, e.g. with college admissions, but in a completely opaque and irrational way, neither pretending to be meritocratic nor actually stating what our goals are and how our methods achieve them.

Overall, though, I agree w/ Harden much more than I disagree, and the book is wonderful. It should definitely be required reading for anyone in education or social policy!

      Thanks for commenting!
