Space mirrors, solar panels, fools, and their money

  1. Reflect orbital series A funding from Lux capital (20M), Sequoia capital and Starship Ventures as of May 2025

  2. Ha, hilarious. Maybe your students need to use a compass more…or something. 360/10*2? 🙂 It’s complicated but it does work.

Regarding investors, It’s somewhat naive to assume they haven’t done the calculation that you’ve done. They spent $20M, and you did simple that calc for free inside what, 10 minutes? They could have hired you – or probably 10K other physicists – and saved $20M but they’re too dumb? mmm…probably not that simple. So very very likely they know what you know, but they also know something you don’t know. The question is: what? 🙂 I think it’s a bit premature to claim they are either lying or stupid. I’d suggest a few hours of investigation at least beyond the NYT article. Chances are NYT reporters are bigger morons than the investors – hence the difference in income. I’d be more inclined to assume the jouranalists are either lying or stupid. I mean, you teach at a university. You obviously bump into an occasional journalism student. Let that be your guide.

    1. VC are not in the business of funding working technology, they only care about an investment making them money – it’s a little naive to think otherwise. And a startup tech company making money has almost nothing to do with spectacular science/entrpreneurship, it’s more about the hype and the vibes that go into the stock price.

And I think if you think journalism students are “bigger morons than the investors”, you need to spend more time around investors and you’ll son change your mind.

Semi-related, in thinking about sports betting, where the market makers try to manipulate the game so they cannot lose (ideally 50% of the money comes in on each side of a bet), similarly the financiers will do whatever they can to manipulate the market e.g.:
